She sang to her hearts content but as they say, “The show must go on.” It was no longer her turn to sing and with several tugs of the microphone, she wouldn’t budge and began to cry because she knew that this was her love and desire to entertain and bring smiles to the faces of people whom she both knew and loved and also didn’t know but would like to make an impact.
As the years passed, Debra continued on her journey, not only singing but also taking up the violin on a very regular and rigid basis, with private lessons from a local Professional Symphony musician. Debra says, “I hated the lessons, they were hard and one hour seemed like ten hours, but my reward, if I could manage, was either a Strawberry Sundae or the infamous Happy Meal from McDonald’s…. and it worked every time!”
In addition to violin, she most definitely knew that singing was for her and constantly struggled with which to pursue the most. She sang in church weekly, then eventually went on to performing for weddings, funerals and banquets. This eventually led to an agenda which included performing as opening artist for other performers, performing at several public Charity events in the Phoenix-Metropolitan area such as The National Day of Prayer and it’s affiliates as well. |

On September 8th, 2001, Debra had the privilege of performing at the Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Arizona for the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. the Padres game, singing the “National Anthem,” while a huge pyrotechnics display and F-16’s flew overhead. Debra says, “Although I was singing, my name in lights, with the 46,000 people in the stadium and myself standing on home plate, I actually felt very small in a sense, but my voice was heard!” The irony of all of this was that just three days later on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, the United States of America was hit by a terrorist attack which we call 9-11. For a moment, to Debra, it seemed that all of that freedom and the message she had tried to bring forth in her performance had suddenly been lost. The Federal Government had decided to not allow any events to take place at any of the U.S. stadiums and/or arenas nationwide.
It was a devastating time for all of America. Over the years and up to today, we as Americans have overcome many hurdles, including this immeasurable and unexpected one and yes, we have “OVERCOME!”
With all of this said, Debra still continues to sing and also continues to play violin. She also plays piano, picks up the guitar and a couple of drumsticks from time to time.
Debra would like to share many more things in the future with you, including her life’s obstacles and how she has learned that if you find a love in life, you find your gift and make it your passion, you can get through anything. Not only can you make it through life’s journeys, but you can make it without being the victim, but by being the victor!Stay tuned for updates and thank you for stopping by! |
